CBD and Exercise Recovery UK: What Does the Research Show?

Can CBD Help With Exercise Recovery?

CBD has become popular among athletes and physically active people, but popularity is not the same thing as proof.

Claims that CBD can reduce post-workout soreness, control inflammation, repair muscle or speed recovery are common online.

The current human evidence is much less certain.

A 2024 systematic review identified only seven studies that met its criteria for CBD, exercise performance and post-exercise recovery. The authors concluded that evidence for recovery-related benefits was limited and that more research was needed. Read the systematic review on PubMed.

Newer studies published since that review have also failed to establish CBD as a reliable exercise-recovery aid.

That means Valley CBD should not advertise CBD as something proven to improve sports recovery.

There is also a regulatory reason for being careful: the Advertising Standards Authority has previously ruled that a claim suggesting CBD could assist with “sports recovery” was a health claim. Because there are no authorised health claims for CBD foods, the claim breached the CAP Code. Read the ASA ruling.

So this article asks a different question:

What has actually happened when CBD has been tested in people before or after exercise?

What Does “Exercise Recovery” Mean?

Exercise recovery is not one single outcome.

Researchers may measure:

  • delayed-onset muscle soreness, usually called DOMS
  • muscle strength
  • running or cycling performance
  • biomarkers associated with muscle damage
  • inflammatory markers
  • perceived fatigue or soreness
  • heart rate and oxygen consumption
  • how quickly physical performance returns after strenuous exercise.

A study showing a change in one laboratory marker does not automatically mean somebody recovered faster or felt better.

That distinction is important when interpreting CBD research.

Does CBD Reduce Muscle Soreness After Exercise?

Current human studies do not establish that it does.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study published in 2025 examined topical CBD after exercise-induced muscle fatigue.

Twenty-eight participants took part. The CBD group used a cream containing approximately 100mg CBD, while another group received placebo cream.

The researchers found no significant CBD benefit for pressure-pain threshold, jumping performance or peak muscle torque and concluded that the CBD cream did not show a significant effect on muscle recovery. Read the study on PubMed.

A newer randomized crossover study published in March 2026 investigated topical CBD gel following strenuous exercise designed to cause muscle damage.

Fifteen physically active participants used CBD gel or placebo over 72 hours.

The researchers found no significant CBD-versus-placebo differences in DOMS scores or blood myoglobin, and no clear acceleration of overall muscle-function recovery. One measure of isometric torque showed a difference favouring CBD, but the authors' overall conclusion was that topical CBD did not appear to accelerate muscle recovery or reduce DOMS. These were small pilot studies, so they cannot prove that CBD never has an effect.

But they certainly do not justify telling customers that CBD reliably reduces post-workout soreness.

Does CBD Reduce Exercise-Related Inflammation?

This is another area where marketing claims have run ahead of the human evidence.

A 2024 randomized double-blind crossover study involved 17 well-trained athletes who completed an intensive six-day training programme.

Participants received placebo, CBD oil or another CBD formulation. The CBD interventions supplied 60mg after each training session.

Researchers measured performance, muscle-damage biomarkers and inflammatory markers.

They found no clear effects of either CBD product overall, and no effects on the measured inflammatory parameters. Read the study on PubMed.

An earlier controlled study involving well-trained female athletes likewise found that CBD did not significantly reduce measured inflammation, fatigue or muscle damage after strenuous eccentric exercise. Read the study on PubMed.

It is therefore not appropriate for the old Valley CBD article to call CBD a “natural anti-inflammatory” that clears exercise-related inflammation.

That is an unauthorised health claim and is stronger than the current human evidence supports.

Does CBD Help Repair Muscle?

There is not good human evidence showing that consumer CBD oil speeds muscle repair.

Researchers sometimes use blood markers such as creatine kinase or myoglobin as indirect indicators of exercise-induced muscle damage.

In the 2024 athlete study, CBD oil was associated with a reduction in myoglobin in one subgroup of more moderately trained participants.

However, the study did not find a consistent overall effect across its recovery and performance outcomes, and the authors concluded that no clear effects of either CBD product were found. Read the study.

The newer 2026 topical study also found no significant CBD-versus-placebo difference in plasma myoglobin. Read the 2026 study.

A single biomarker result should therefore not be converted into:

“CBD repairs muscles faster.”

That conclusion has not been demonstrated.

Does CBD Improve Exercise Performance?

Again, the evidence is limited.

A larger randomized crossover trial published in 2025 tested 25 trained runners.

Participants received placebo, 50mg CBD or 300mg CBD before endurance exercise.

CBD did not significantly improve:

  • perceived exertion
  • exercise enjoyment
  • heart rate
  • exercise efficiency
  • peak oxygen consumption
  • time to exhaustion
  • muscle-damage markers.

The researchers concluded that low-to-moderate acute CBD doses did not appear to meaningfully improve or impair endurance performance. Read the study on PubMed.

An earlier small pilot involving nine trained men produced several physiological signals worthy of further investigation, but it did not show an improvement in time to exhaustion and its authors explicitly called for larger studies. Read the pilot study.

This is why small exploratory findings should not become product promises.

What About CBD and Cortisol?

The old Valley CBD article says high-strength CBD is “known to help balance cortisol levels” and that this creates the ideal environment for muscles to rebuild.

We should remove that completely.

Cortisol is involved in the body's normal response to exercise, but there is not adequate human exercise-recovery evidence showing that taking ordinary consumer CBD oil lowers exercise-related cortisol in a way that improves muscle repair.

Even if future research identifies effects on cortisol, demonstrating a change in a hormone would still not automatically prove better recovery.

The current page takes several theoretical steps and presents them as an established consumer benefit.

That is precisely what we want to stop doing throughout the site.

What Does the Overall Research Say?

The most useful overview remains the 2024 systematic review.

Researchers screened 901 publications, but only seven studies fully met their inclusion criteria.

They found some signals involving physiological performance parameters, but the evidence regarding strength and post-exercise recovery remained limited.

Their conclusion was essentially that more research was needed. Read the systematic review.

Since then, the evidence has expanded slightly, but it has not transformed the picture.

The 2025 endurance study did not show a compelling performance or recovery advantage, while the 2026 topical study did not show reduced DOMS or accelerated overall muscle recovery.

So the evidence in 2026 is better described as:

interesting but insufficient to establish CBD as an effective exercise-recovery aid.

Why Are CBD Exercise Studies Difficult to Compare?

There are major differences between studies.

Researchers have used:

  • oral CBD
  • capsules
  • oils
  • soluble CBD formulations
  • topical creams and gels
  • single doses
  • repeated doses
  • trained athletes
  • untrained participants
  • men
  • women
  • resistance exercise
  • endurance exercise.

Study sizes have also generally been small.

The amount of CBD used varies enormously.

For example, recent exercise trials have examined amounts such as 50mg, 60mg, 100mg topical CBD and 300mg, while another study used weight-based doses substantially above ordinary consumer intake.

Those study amounts should not be treated as recommendations for consumers.

How Do Those Research Doses Compare With Current UK Guidance?

This is crucial.

The Food Standards Agency currently advises healthy adults consuming CBD foods to limit total CBD consumption to 10mg per day.

The FSA describes that as consumer-safety guidance.

It is not an effective sports-recovery dose and it does not mean that consuming more has been proven to improve exercise recovery. Read current FSA guidance.

Many exercise studies have used CBD exposures well above 10mg.

That creates an important limitation when applying their findings to ordinary UK consumer CBD products.

A study using 60mg, 300mg or repeated high doses cannot simply be used to promise what will happen when somebody consumes a retail product within current FSA guidance.

Are There Safety Considerations for Active People?

Yes.

Exercise does not make the general CBD safety guidance disappear.

The FSA says CBD can cause drowsiness and can interact with some medications.

It advises people taking medication to avoid CBD unless under medical direction, and it advises avoidance for children, people who are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive. People with underlying health conditions are also advised to avoid consuming CBD unless under medical direction.

Greater lifetime exposure is also associated in the FSA's assessment with an increased likelihood of longer-term adverse effects such as liver or thyroid problems. Read current FSA guidance.

What About Competitive Athletes and Drug Testing?

Competitive athletes need an additional layer of caution.

The 2026 World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List, which came into force on 1 January 2026, excludes cannabidiol itself from the prohibited cannabinoid category, while THC and other prohibited cannabinoids remain restricted in competition. See the current WADA Prohibited List.

That does not mean a CBD product can guarantee an athlete will pass a doping test.

The FSA also warns UK consumers about potential THC exposure even from products labelled “THC-free.”

Valley CBD oils are formulated with CBD isolate rather than broad-spectrum CBD, but we should describe that simply as a product-composition fact.

We should not turn it into a guaranteed anti-doping or drug-test outcome.

Competitive athletes remain responsible for complying with the rules that apply to their sport.

Does CBD Isolate Recover Muscles Better Than Full-Spectrum CBD?

There is no good human evidence establishing that CBD isolate produces superior exercise recovery.

Likewise, there is no reliable evidence showing that full-spectrum CBD produces better sports recovery because of an “entourage effect”.

Those are separate scientific questions from whether somebody prefers one type of product formulation.

Valley CBD uses CBD isolate, but that fact should not be presented as proof of superior recovery.

Should Older Adults Use CBD for Exercise Recovery?

There is not enough evidence to recommend CBD specifically for older adults' exercise recovery.

That is why we have removed “Seniors” from the old article's title and positioning.

Exercise is important across adulthood, but the available CBD recovery studies generally do not provide evidence that older people receive a special benefit.

We should not invent one.

Does CBD reduce DOMS?

Current human evidence does not establish that CBD reliably reduces delayed-onset muscle soreness.

Is CBD banned in competitive sport?

CBD itself is excepted from WADA's prohibited cannabinoid category, but THC and other cannabinoids remain prohibited in competition under the 2026 list.

Athletes should never assume that a CBD-labelled product guarantees a negative anti-doping test.

Does Valley CBD claim its oils improve recovery?

No.

We can explain independent research about CBD and exercise, but Valley CBD does not claim that its consumer CBD oils reduce soreness, control inflammation, repair muscles or improve athletic performance.

The Bottom Line

CBD and exercise recovery is a genuine area of scientific research.

But the evidence is not strong enough to justify the confident claims commonly made online.

A 2024 systematic review found only a small body of qualifying human research and described evidence for recovery-related benefits as limited.

Subsequent controlled studies have not fundamentally changed that conclusion.

Research involving trained athletes found no clear overall effect on recovery or inflammatory markers; a 2025 endurance trial found no compelling improvement in exercise performance; and a 2026 topical CBD study found no significant reduction in DOMS or acceleration of overall muscle recovery.

The appropriate conclusion is therefore:

CBD is being studied in exercise and sports science, but current human evidence does not establish it as a proven muscle-recovery or performance-enhancing aid.

That is also consistent with UK advertising rules. The ASA has previously ruled that advertising CBD as assisting with sports recovery constitutes a health claim, and the FSA confirms that there are currently no authorised health claims for CBD food products.
